And L2TP / PPTP required using a Radius server to authenticate with AD credentials - workable, but way more complicated. If this is not a problem, i see no fault in using L2TP. We had the same irritation of not being able to mass deploy SSL clients easily, but went that road anyway because of the easier AD integration.
